Teams Direct Route Setup Guide

Before you start…

The following guide will run through how to setup your Microsoft 365 tenancy with a Simtex Teams Direct Route SIP Trunk.

Prior to running through this guide, you must complete our signup process. A unique pair of domains / FQDN’s will then be supplied to you for each tenancy.

Checklist:

I have signed up for Simtex Teams Direct Route SIP Trunk
Simtex have given me two unique domain names
I know the Microsoft 365 Admin administrator account credentials for the Teams tenancy
I’m using a Windows PC with Windows 10, or have remote PowerShell access to Microsoft
I have a drink or three in close proximity

1. Setting up your unique domains

The first stage setting up Teams in your tenancy involves some back and forth between Simtex and yourself.
We supply you with a pair of unique domains – ie 829372831.tdr.mycloudvoip.com.au and 829372831.tdr-b.mycloudvoip.com.au

Firstly these are added to your tenancy, then a unique code must be sent back to us. Once we have setup the domain we will let you know it is now ok to verify the new domains and continue with the Teams setup.

Simtex
After signup, we will provide you with a unique pair of domain names

Add both domain names to Microsoft 365, supply us with the unique TXT records
Simtex
We will process the TXT records and configure the domain on our side
You
You may now verify the domains and continue with the setup

Login to Microsoft 365 admin center – https://admin.microsoft.com
Click Settings and select Domains

Once in the domains screen click on the “Add Domain” button

Enter the first domain, then click Use this domain

Let Simtex know what the two unique TXT entries are for each domain – you can reply to the sign-up ticket (ZG-xxxxxxx)
Please make sure you supply us with the domain and the TXT entries so they don’t get mixed up!
You will not be able to click Verify until we have added the TXT records, so for now, please click Close
Both domains will now be sitting in a non-verified state

When we have given you the green light to proceed, click on Verify
Once verified, click on Continue
Un-tick Exchange and Exchange Online Protection, and click Continue

If all goes well, you should see some green
Remember to do the same for the second domain

2. Activating Domains

Domains must be assigned to temporary licensed users
The next stage involves adding two dummy users, one of each for the two unique domains supplied by Simtex.

Each of these users must be assigned a license. These users are only temporary, so feel free to shuffle licenses around from other uses if required!

In Microsoft 365 admin center, click on Users
Click Add User
Fill out any old name, just make sure you select one of the two newly-added domains. Click next
Assign a license, click next and Finish adding
Repeat the above process for the second domain

Note

Remember to add two users, one for each domain!

3. Digging into PowerShell

Setup PowerShell Environment

In order to add the two Simtex gateways, setup dial plans and configure users for voice, various commands need to be issued through a PowerShell session communicating with Microsoft 365. This part of the configuration is a little tricky – if you get stuck or are a bit worried, feel free get in touch with our support staff.

- PowerShell must be be launched as an administrator
- Click on the Windows Menu, type powershell, right click on PowerShell and select Run As Administrator
- Follow through these instructions to setup the MicrosoftTeams PowerShell module – note you do not need to install the Skype connector

Set-ExecutionPolicy -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted 
Install-Module -Name MicrosoftTeams -Force -AllowClobber

Inside the PowerShell window, paste in the following commands – you will be prompted for your Microsoft 365 administrator username
A second window will then popup requesting your password and/or MFA

Connect-MicrosoftTeams

If successful you will see a table with one row of data similar to us

4. Dial Plan & Voice Routes

Configure Teams for PSTN Calling

Note these instructions have changed!

PSTN Gateway’s are no longer added to your tenancy, our instructions guide you through adding a Voice Routing Policy which points to our redundant provider gateways.

Various commands need to be issued through a PowerShell session communicating with Microsoft 365. This part of the configuration is a little tricky – if you get stuck or are a bit worried, feel free get in touch with our support staff.

Copy the below into notepad
Replace XXXXXXXXXX with your Teams Trunk subscription number on two lines (will be similar to 2140000000)
When done, inside your PowerShell window, paste the following commands:

5. Setting Up Users

Enabling Teams Voice, Assigning Voice Policies

The final piece of the puzzle involves enabling voice for your individual tenant users, assigning the voice policy, and waiting.

After executing the PowerShell commands for each user, the Microsoft machine needs to prepare and bake a Teams Voice cake for each user.
As some ingredients are hard to come by, and the oven on the blink from time to time, these cakes can take anywhere between a few minutes and 24 hours to bake and deliver.

With the dial-plan and policy ready to go, we can setup users and associate them with the dial-plan policy
Ensure the user has the correct Phone System license, or has an E5 license
Replace the red-highlighted values below with:
- The target user
- A number supplied by Simtex – one number per user, you cannot share numbers
